National Informatics Centre (NIC) is a premiere S&T institution of the Government of India, established in 1976, for providing e-Government/e-Governance Solutions adopting best practices, integrated services and global solutions in Government Sector.
In 1975, the Government of India strategically decided to take effective steps for the development of information systems and utilization of information resources and also for introducing computer based decision support system (informatics-led development) in government ministries and departments to facilitate planning and programme implementation to further the growth of economic and social development. Following this,the Central Government nucleated a high priority plan project “National Informatics Centre (NIC)” in 1976, and later on with the financial assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to the tune of US$4.4 million.
NIC has played an important role of an active catalyst and facilitator in informatics development programme in Governments at the national, state and district levels, during the last 26 years which made them take policy decisions to create knowledge societies – societies that can exploit knowledge to derive competitive advantage using the opportunities provided by digital technology. NIC has been instrumental in adopting Information Technology and Communication Technology to reach out into India i.e. by implementing IT applications in Social and Public Administrations.
About NIC Gujarat State Centre
NIC Gujarat has been providing software, hardware and webhosting support to State and Central Government departments in Gujarat. The services include study of user requirements, identifying and prioritizing areas for computerisation, system design, development, implementation and training, technical support for hardware procurement, Networking, LAN, WAN, Video Conferencing etc.
Most of the departments have been given Email facility through dial-up/leased line connections. Internet, Email and Video Conferencing facilities are also extended to the Government Departments.
NIC Gujarat has developed E-Govenance applications for the Land Records, RTOs, Municipal Councils, Panchayats, District Collectorates, Directorate of Accounts.
National Knowledge Network
State Level POP of National Knowledge Network (NKN) has been established and made fully functional since May 2013. NKN POP has been equipped with High end ASR9000 Routers Cluster for High Availability, 10G Backbone connectivity from NIC Mumbai and Hyderabad, 2.5G connectivity with NIC HQ, 02 Nos. 60 KVAUPS in load sharing mode Anycast DNS Server, Surveillance Cameras, Biometric and Smart card based Access Control, Video Wall etc. NKN POP is operational on 24x7x365 basis to extend necessary support for the end institutions. As on today 54 prestigious institutions i.e. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO Ahmedabad), IIM (Ahmedabad), IIT(Gandhinagar), Medical College (Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Surat, Jamnagar), All Gujarat State Universities, NIT, GEC Bharuch, GEC Bhuj, GEC Bhavnagar, GEC Gandhinagar, GEC Surat & Engineering, etc., besides many more institutions are connected and availing NKN services. NKN connectivity has also been extended to the State Data Center. We have the presence of all three NLDs along with their end equipments i.e. BSNL, RAILTEL and PGCIL for the extension of end user connectivity.
